Antibiotic resistance is a serious threat to livestock and human health
For many years, antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) have been widely used in animal production to boost the performance of livestock. Although antibiotics can save lives, this excessive use in animal agriculture has contributed to the development and spread of antibiotic resistance in both animals and humans. As a result, their use has been restricted in several regions and alternatives are now urgently needed to promote the health and productivity of livestock in a sustainable way.
The animal nutrition market
Interventions that restrict antibiotic use in food-producing animals reduced antibiotic-resistant bacteria in livestock by up to 39%
Over 70% of antimicrobials produced globally are used in animal agriculture
At least 67 countries report having legislation in place to control antimicrobials use in animals
Usage of antibiotics in EU and US
