Plasticizers

Challenge

Consumers urge plastic companies to redesign applications and improve the health and environmental impact of its components

Over recent years consumer perception on the use of plastic has completely shifted. Each plastic application now needs to be justified. Many of the plastics we regularly use are flexible or ‘soft’, the result of plasticizers, which make up a large part (e.g. 50%) of their composition.

Besides the sustainability drive, there are two additional trends stimulating innovation in the plasticizers industry. Firstly, the shift away from phthalate plasticizers due to toxicity concerns and secondly, the requirement for new functionalities, such as improved compatibility, biodegradability and low carbon footprint to accommodate bioplastics.

Global demand
The worldwide production of plasticizers is over 5 million tons per year.
Volume contribution
PVC products may contain up to 50% by weight of plasticizers, most commonly phthalates.
+214% demand
Global bioplastics production capacity is set to increase from 2.42 million tons in 2021 to 7.59 million tons in 2026.

X-Craft 68 & CaproCraft

ChainCraft offers X-Craft 68, a unique fatty acid blend composed of more than 90% caproic acid (C6) combined with heptanoic acid (C7) and caprylic acid (C8) making it ideal for applications requiring a sustainable and economic building block for polyol ester production with an average sidechain length of over 6 carbons.

In addition, we offer fractionated fatty acids such as PentaCraft (C5), CaproCraft (C6), HeptaCraft (C7) and CapryCraft (C8) with a purity of more than 98% to serve plasticizer applications that require refined MCFA’s.

How ChainCraft can help the move away from phthalates

The extensive fatty acid-based portfolio developed by ChainCraft’s proprietary chain elongation technology can provide leading plasticizer innovators with many opportunities for the development of unique, new and sustainable products.

These products are renewable and lower the overall carbon footprint of plastic. Acting as a promising starting point for a more secure supply in the future.
