The chemical industry is one of the world’s most polluting industries
The chemical industry is one of the world’s most polluting industries. It is responsible for 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 9% of energy consumption. This is partly due to the increasing exploitation of fossil fuel and palm oil, to meet the growing demand for fatty acids from agri-food, chemical and material industries.
Around 89 million tons of food waste is generated every year in the EU
50% of the food produced is lost or wasted before and after reaching the consumer
Food waste costs EU businesses and households an estimated €143 billion a year
Given the abundant volumes globally generated and the diversity of its chemical components, food waste is being employed as a raw material to produce fuels and chemicals.
At ChainCraft, we saw an opportunity to reduce the chemical industries impact and to leverage this surplus food waste.
