Life Cycle Assessment

Determining the environmental impact of ChainCraft’s fatty acid production
ChainCraft has performed a life cycle assessment (LCA) to:

What is an LCA?

An LCA is an internationally recognized analytical framework for calculating the environmental impacts of a service or a product along its life cycle. It is a widely accepted and used approach for compiling a data inventory of energy and raw materials inputs as well as product outputs and emissions, evaluating potential environmental impacts and interpreting results to assist corporate decision making.

Our LCA calculates the impact of the following ChainCraft products:

C-Craft® Liquid (50% dm), which is a wet product produced by fermentation of organic waste and residues, purification and concentration

C-Craft® Powder (100% dm), which is a dry version of C-Craft Liquid

Fractionated purified acids (of C4, C5, C6, C7 & C8 chains), which are distillation products of X-Craft® 28

How does it work?

For conducting a life cycle assessment, the overall goal is to map the products and processes in scope as detailed as possible, simulating reality, to get a representative system and impact. To do this, a cradle-to-factory gate analysis is performed, accounting for the raw material production, inbound logistics, the use of chemicals, energy, and water as well as the release and treatment of wastewater.

Results and Learnings

The carbon footprint impact of ChainCraft products is significantly lower when compared to the evaluated alternatives.

The ChainCraft products benefit from the low impact of the raw material input, which is only related to the transport of agricultural and food residues. The ChainCraft products are also benefited by the low impact of green electricity. Main impact contributors are the use of chemicals and heat for processing.
